Letterform Pattern Posters
Exploration project to show different ways to manipulate the selected letterforms/numbers physically and digitally to create new shapes.
The objective of this project was to investigate the creative potential of letterforms and numbers in graphic design by developing a unique pattern. I conducted research on typefaces, selected specific letters and/or numbers, and experimented with creating new shapes using these letterforms and numbers. The final outcome is a printed 11x17" poster showcasing the pattern design, emphasizing the chosen letter or number. To achieve this, I traced the selected letterforms or numbers onto linoblock material and cut out the shapes using linocutting tools. The overall goal was to explore the tactile and physical aspects of pattern making through linoblock printing. I transferred the chosen letterform or number onto the material using tracing paper and a transfer tool. I then carefully carved out the traced shape to create a relief surface, applied ink evenly onto the surface, and pressed the inked linoblock onto paper or fabric to produce prints, experimenting with different colors, papers, and application techniques. I considered how various carving techniques (such as line thickness and depth of cuts) affect the final print, as well as variations in ink application (like gradient effects and texture) to create unique visual effects. Additionally, I reflected on the relationship between the physical process of linoblock printing and the digital exploration of pattern design.
